THE SECRETS WE KEEP

Emotionally Haunting!

Jasper Warren and Lacy share a flat in Chicago. Best friends forever or so Jasper believed. Both have struggled through their lives with disappointment, depression, and being different. Jasper must come to terms with the secrets that everyone, including himself, has been keeping while also building new relationships and rebuilding broken ones.

The author, Rick R. Reed crafts a story of loss, disconnected relationships, and building new stronger relationships. Through his characters, he encourages his listeners to grow, and be accepting not only of others but of oneself. As listeners, we are given two sides to each character and once their true selves are revealed, we are shown the importance of connecting completely with someone and not one-sidedly. The pain of loss (of others and oneself) is touched upon and very poignant. Reed delivers an affirming story that still pulls at one’s heartstrings thoroughly. The story flows smoothly with a few plot twists that while expected are still moving.

The narrator, David Allen Vargo, is a delight to hear. His voice is rich and emotional when appropriate. He captures the essence of each character and projects it through speech with emotion, cadence, and delivery. I could listen to him for hours on end and never grow tired. He speaks clearly and with passion.

It is vital to highly emotional stories such as this for the listener to actually hear and feel the emotions. For me, David delivers!

This is an engaging book with authentic issues and characters.
