Dangers of Retirement

For fifty years, Tim and Lena Caldwell have lived quietly under names that were not always theirs, believing the past they left behind had finally forgotten them. Then a mysterious man enters their home with a warning that shatters their peaceful retirement.

A deadly attack is only days away, threatening countless lives and potentially changing the country forever. Forced to confront a past they thought was buried, Tim and Lena must decide where their loyalties lie while staying one step ahead of those hunting them. With time running out and enemies closing in, surviving may be only the beginning of what they must do to stop what is coming.

The book is exceptionally well written, with fully developed characters brought to life through vivid imagery and natural dialogue. The author, Ray Wenck, establishes the suspense early and maintains it throughout, while engaging and unexpected plot twists make it difficult to predict where the story is headed.

One aspect I especially enjoyed was the way the story plays into the assumption that being older somehow means being disabled or incapable. Tim and Lena may be retired, but the instincts, determination, and training from their earlier lives have never disappeared. Those skills become critical not only to their own survival but also to protecting their friends and family.

Some elements of the story are unusual and could easily have felt unrealistic, yet they are handled in a way that works within the premise. Tim and Lena remain believable and relatable, creating a strong connection with the listener even as the circumstances around them become increasingly extraordinary. The result is a suspenseful and original story built around characters you genuinely become invested in.

Narrator Jack de Golia once again delivers a fantastic performance. His character voices are distinct without being exaggerated, with subtle differences that make it easy to follow who is speaking while still sounding natural.

His pacing and cadence are smooth, and his deliberate use of pauses adds to the suspense and gives important moments the time they need to have an impact. He captures the personalities and emotions of the characters while allowing the tension of the story to build naturally.

Jack de Golia continues to be a narrator I thoroughly enjoy listening to. His ability to complement the author’s writing without overpowering it makes an already captivating story even better.

This story captivated me from beginning to end. I became completely invested in Tim and Lena, their past, their relationships, and what would happen next. The suspense, unexpected twists, and unique premise made this one of those stories I simply did not want to stop listening to. Five stars hardly seem enough, and I sincerely hope this is not the last we hear from Tim and Lena. I would gladly return to their world for another adventure.
