Danger Beyond Olume

The Astralacan expedition has achieved more than expected, largely due to Maglen and Dro-Gar’s decision to become demon hunters. Guided by the powerful Olumian advisor Ahnjen, the humans have established a fragile foothold on Olume—but not everyone welcomes their presence.

Driven into the continent’s uncharted regions, Maglen and his companions encounter strange beings, growing dangers, and shifting political alliances. As tensions rise among elves, dwarves, rebels, and giants, the demons themselves begin displaying alarming new behavior.

With their mission faltering and Maglen’s risky instincts leading them into greater danger, the group must risk everything they have accomplished—or lose their place on Olume entirely.

The author, Geo Rogers, delivers a rich and imaginative fantasy filled with action, intrigue, and adventure. Character development is solid, with the characters displaying distinct personalities and motivations that continue to evolve throughout the story. The dialogue feels natural and purposeful, consistently moving the storyline forward while maintaining a good overall flow.

Although the book can be enjoyed as a standalone installment in the series, I occasionally had difficulty following the storyline or keeping some of the characters and events straight. Greater familiarity with the earlier books may have provided additional context. Even so, the detailed world-building, steady action, fun and evolving conflicts create an interesting and richly imagined fantasy that keeps the listener invested in what happens next.

The narrator, Stephen William Hodd, delivers a clear and engaging performance, giving the characters rich, distinctive voices that help bring the fantasy world to life. His effective use of pauses, pacing, and cadence complements the action and intrigue while adding depth to the storyline. The subtle differences in his character voices make it easier to distinguish between characters as the various conflicts unfold.

His delivery remains smooth and consistent, and he effectively projects the emotions of the characters without overplaying them. His ability to capture the atmosphere and emotion of the story adds another layer to the experience, making the world of Olume feel more vivid and immersive.

A richly imagined fantasy filled with action, intrigue, and adventure, enhanced by an engaging narration that brings both the characters and the world of Olume vividly to life.
