Justice Born in Darkness

In the haunted streets of Tremé, Gabriel Saint-Croix investigates the suspicious death of his father, a decorated Black police officer killed during Hurricane Katrina. When his search for the truth leaves him brutally attacked and near death, ancestral spirits answer his call for justice, transforming him into the powerful Baron Midnight.

Armed with supernatural abilities, Gabriel hunts those responsible for decades of lies and corruption. But as his quest for justice grows increasingly deadly, so does the darkness within him, blurring the line between vengeance and something far more sinister.

The author, Dblkrose, delivers a well-written and intense storyline filled with vivid, richly detailed scenes that easily pull the listener into Gabriel’s world. The writing is strong and confident, with an understanding of the characters and their emotions that makes them feel complex, grounded, and fully developed. Gabriel’s transformation from a man seeking answers and justice into an almost superhero-like figure empowered by supernatural forces is particularly compelling, especially as he struggles against the darkness growing within himself.

The supernatural and folkloric elements are especially well handled, woven naturally into the story with a depth and authenticity that suggests genuine knowledge and respect for the traditions behind them. Rather than simply serving as a backdrop, they become an important part of Gabriel’s journey and the world surrounding him. The combination of supernatural forces, justice, vengeance, and internal conflict adds depth to an already intense and engaging story.

Kevin Perkins shines as the narrator with his deep, rich voice that can sound commanding and threatening when the story demands it. His delivery and cadence are perfectly timed, building tension and allowing the darker moments to carry the weight they deserve. He speaks clearly and gives each character a distinct voice, using subtle changes in tone rather than exaggerated differences. Perkins also captures the characters’ emotions authentically, conveying anger, fear, determination, grief, and the growing darkness within Gabriel. His smooth transitions and controlled pacing draw the listener deeper into the story, while his powerful voice is particularly well suited to the supernatural and darker elements. Perkins doesn’t simply narrate the story—he gives it atmosphere and intensity.

Baron Midnight is an intense, atmospheric listen that skillfully blends supernatural forces, vengeance, and the struggle between justice and the darkness within.
